How can I clean rust off of a hamster cage?

I have an empty in my backyard. It is mostly plastic, but there is some metal around the outside for air. It has some rust on it, but the rest of the cage is useable. I would hate to have to throw it away, since only the door part is bad. I am afraid the rust might posion the new hamster im getting, so I want to clean it off. Are there any home made solutions that will get the rust off, but not harm the hamster in any way? Also, do you have any suggestions on how to clean an old hamster cage to get it ready for a new one?

Naval Jelly works great, but wear gloves and rinse real well. Make sure you do it outside also.

If the cage is chrome plated, try some coke and alum. foil. use a tooth brush to apply the coke and then rub off with alum. foil.

This may sound strange but it works well. I’ve used coca cola many times to remove rust from metal along with a wire brush. Also wd-40 is an excellent rust inhibitor. Simple Green is an environmentally safe product that will clean your cage and is not harmful to your pets.

White vinegar should be sprayed directly onto the rust stain and scrubbed in. Then spray again and allowed to sit for twenty to thirty minutes. After being allowed to sit, the rust stain should come off easily when the vinegar is wiped away.

Another homemade rust remover solution is a cup of Borax and the juice from one lemon, it makes a rust remover paste to be applied directly to the stain. let set for twenty to thirty minutes and then be scrubbed clean. It might take a couple applications for this rust remover to be successful, but this is safe for many surfaces, as well as safe for pets and children.
