How do you get your hamster to sit still long enought to cuddle?

I have a 14 week old who never sits still long enough for me to cuddle him.

I read all these stories of Hamsters sleeping on people, sitting still on them and letting them pet them etc.

My little guy is always so full of energy and excitement I can’t get him to sit still for 5 secs after he wakes up.

Am I missing something here? Is it, is it an age thing? Do they become more docile as they get older?

It is the age. They usually become calmer as they age, but it’s also important to encourage the behaviour you want. LIke offering him a treat while sitting on your shoulder.

another thing you can do is to (if you have one) put him in his excersise ball (you know, covered ball so he can run on floor, just saying my friends dont get that) and let him run (supervised and in a safe area, no stairs) so he can burn off some energy if the picture is what you want, if not, the age also has something, my hamster is a spaz, she is verryy hyper

I would contribute to 2 factors : age and trust.

A slighter old hamster above 6mth are usually much calmer in nature and more likely able to sit still.

Another factor is trust. I had 3 hamsters sleeping either on my lap, hands or in my pocket. You need a lot of bonding with your hamster (you need to be immoblie or as little action as possible) to let them trust you.

PS: When i say sleep, i refer to – when I place them back at their cage, they are still sleeping. I’m their mother after all.

Sounds like ur guy wont be able to cuddle without trying to get away. If you get him to warm up to you, maybe. Just take everything slow. Oh, wait, he is young right? Youngsters are little wily ones! He will get more relaxed when he is older. Just research and keep an eye on him! Try, and any time you get him to stay still, give him a little veggie! It works!

When my baby girl was about 2 months old she would fall asleep in my hands or in my lap but when she was awake she was super hyper! Then at about 3 months the sleeping in my lap/hands stopped and she was just ALWAYS hyper. Now that she is almost a year old she has calmed down a bit but still pretty hyper but she does relax in my arms…she doesn’t fall asleep in my hands/lap/arms anymore but she does just chill with me in front of the TV, hehe. Maybe yours will relax with you at about 10 months old…

Your hamster may not be getting as much energy and needed. Make sure the wheel moves well, and frequently put it in a ball so it can burn off some energy. When they get older, they grow less active.
