After lifting him and keeping him in the box a few times the hamster will start to understand that he needs to relieve himself in the box. It is important to note that the litter material should be different from the bedding material or else your hamster will get confused. The litter box should be cleaned every other day and do not be surprised if the hamster goes to box and uses it as soon as you clean it this is normal behavior. He is simply marking his territory.
